Day 1: The Institute Of Advanced Legal Studies Role In National PhD Education

IALS offers a new research training programme, 'Doctoral Research Masterclasses in Law' to assist MPhil and PhD students in law registered at universities across the UK. New for 2025, this programme, provides the chance for informative discussion, legal research guidance and opportunities for networking. MPhil/PhD law students from across the UK are warmly invited to attend these specially tailored days of presentations and networking opportunities at the Institute of Advanced Legal Studies. You are welcome to book for one or more sessions as fits best for you.

  • Introduction to Doctoral Masterclasses - a series of lectures on doctoral research

Day 2: Sources and Theories

  • IALS Library: successful researching, using our electronic resources
  • The foreign, international and comparative law research collections at IALS Library

  • Theoretical Frameworks an Introduction
  • Law and Humanities and the Law and Humanities Research Hub
  • Law and Technology

Day 3: The Publishing Imperative

Topics to be covered include:

  • Legal writing
  • Disseminating your legal research
  • Getting your research published in journals
  • What books are law publishers looking to publish?
  • Open Accessing Publishing
  • Tips on keeping up-to-date with your topic after completion
